Oxo
NOT TIC-TAC-TOE.
Line up five and you don't win — you get a choice.
Cash in the cells you want, or leave them behind to turn into stone.
You are playing for score, not for the win. Complete a line, a 3×3 square or a 12-cell ring and nothing is over — you choose which of its cells to cash in. Every cell you leave behind turns to stone and blocks that square for good. Cash a cell that two patterns share and it pays into both.
Between waves there is a shop, and what you buy there is the run. One totem pays you for the stone you left behind; another pays you for the space you kept clear. Holding either one turns every cash-in decision inside out.
If you have played Balatro, you know the shape: a small board, a build, and numbers that get out of hand.
CORE MECHANICS
- ▸ FIVE PATTERNS: Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, 3×3 square, and a 12-cell ring — each worth a different multiplier. Overlap them and one cell pays twice.
- ▸ BUILD A RUN: 27 totems in 5 slots, bought between waves. Slot order matters, and one of them costs you your entire item bar.
- ▸ A BOT THAT SCALES: It plays the same scoring loop you do, and from wave 2 it brings an ability of its own — one of ten, named on the wave card before your first move.
- ▸ BOSS WAVES: Every third wave adds a condition to hold: clear in 30 turns, make no stone, or use no items. Hold it and you win a totem better than the shop sells.
- ▸ THE WINDOW: Finishing a run earns tokens for the frame on the wall — a view, a casing, and a pet that lives in it. Pure decoration; none of it touches a run.
📝 IN DEVELOPMENT — FEEDBACK WANTED
This build is the first 6 waves of a 12-wave game, and it ends on a boss. Every balance number in it is a placeholder that has never been through a real player — tell me in the comments what felt bad, unfair, or badly balanced.
Code was written with AI assistance. There is no generative AI in the art or the audio — the sprites and the eight sound effects are produced by deterministic generator scripts that live in the game's own public repo, and the music is my own.
